Driving Test

Many find their test day to be the most nerve wrecking day of their lives, and the most memorable.

As the no 1 driving instructor in Galway, I’ve found the best way to get you ready for test day, is to ensure that there are no surprises for you on the day.

As part of your driving lessons with me, we will focus on driving the test routes that you will cover during your test, we will focus on the types of situations that you will cover, and we will focus on everything that happens during your driving test step by step.

Here are a few things you should know about your driving test;

Examination

There will be a short examination before your driving test begins. This is to quickly test your knowledge on the rules of the road. Here, you should review the 34 most popular questions asked as part of your driving test.

Car

Before the driving tester is comfortable to sit beside you and conduct your test, he will check that your car is in good condition, and that you are familiar with the cars controls. If you are taking the test in your own car, make sure is in good mechanical order, and is clean inside ant out.

The driving test

The driving test for cars lasts half-an-hour to 40 minutes and includes:

  • Questions on the Rules of the Road (including identifying road signs)
  • Demonstrating hand signals
  • Reversing round a corner
  • A U-turn in the road
  • A hill start
  • Driving approximately five miles in a variety of road and traffic conditions

Your driving will be assessed in the following situations:

  • Moving off
  • Driving in traffic
  • Stopping
  • Reversing around a corner
  • 3 point turn
  • Starting on a hill

Aspects of your driving assessed will include:

  • Road positioning
  • Overtaking and passing
  • Anticipation and observation
  • Use of mirrors and signals
  • Progress Speed
  • Compliance with traffic lights, road signs and markings
  • Use of the vehicle controls (accelerator, clutch, gears, brakes and steering)
  • Use of secondary controls such as wipers, de-misters, etc
